Exposure to radiation continues to be a “hot” topic in medical imaging and in the lay community. As several state governments have enacted new mandates around radiation administration, there have been a number of activities in the radiological community, along with advancements in applicable informatics tools focused on providing more accurate estimates of the radiation patients receive.

Attendees will view two demonstrations of independently developed methods for extracting anatomy-specific exposure metrics from legacy CT dose report screen captures from DICOM images using an open-source optical character recognition tool. Updates to these open-source tools will be provided including patient size estimation; the demonstration of a method for extracting radiopharmaceutical tracer and administered activity from Nuclear Medicine reports; and the demonstration of dose monitoring and reporting tools.

A demonstration of the National Radiology Data Registry (NRDR) will be provided and use of the Dose Index Registry (DIR) for comparison of procedural doses to global community dose levels, and a description of how an organization can participate. Culminating in update of current and near future activities of the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Radiation Exposure Monitoring (REM) profile as one way of standardizing dose data coming from different vendors imaging equipment will be review.

Objectives:

  1. Discover methods and open source tools for extracting critical radiation dose data.
  2. Review the National Radiology Data Registry and Dose Index Registry.
  3. Describe current and future IHE and REM profiles.
